Production Research
Content - The content can be original or optioned. Both require research. Optioning for a screen writer is they can sell a script they have written for a certain amount and if the film is not made within 2 years the screen writer can take the script and sell it to someone else.
Copyright is a type of intellectual property that cannot be used without permission of the owner. As copyright is intellectual property it can be bought and sold anywhere. Copyright owners can choose to licence others to use their content which retaining the right of owning the product. Short film makers don't have the budget to own the song so they most likely buy the rights to use it in their film. For short films they will most likely go to unknown producers to make a song because their songs are not copyrighted yet.
Viability - An important purpose of production research is to demonstrate that your planned product is viable. You need to test to viability of your product at a number of different levels:
Placement media -
Finance costs - When dealing with financial costs you will need to consider: crew, locations, talent, props/costumes, permissions, equipment and miscellaneous e.g food and drinks. This is all very important when dealing with a film because if the budget is not kept it will lead the film to being in serious trouble so they have to analyse each part of the financial costs very carefully.
Technological resources - Software is something within the computer. The hardware is something physical. Audio and moving image products will require the use of various types of recording and editing equipment. A range of hardware and software options are available for print and multimedia production. A short film producer could pay for licences to pay for editing software and put them on multiple computers so it will make it cheaper for the budget of the film.
Personnel - You would need creative people to help research and develop your ideas, technical expertise to assist in production stages, and then marketing people to help sell your product and generate income from advertisement, sell and merchandising.
Locations - The filmmakers will undertake research for their locations to identify suitable venues for filming to take place which can assist on the planning of different shots, assess any problems of health and safety issues that the crew might face.

- Is the product financially viable?
- Do you have the necessary skills to undertake the production?
- Do you have the right equipment and technology to make the film?
- What help and support will you need?
- Have you got enough time to make the product?

Self Generated Research
Self generated Research is research that is provided by yourself. This is research that you have created and it has originality to it, whether it is a video you have produced yourself, a music piece or a photograph you have taken.
An example of self generated research is your own recorded video. Video production you've made which becomes research once you are looking into elements of filming techniques and shot types, so long as you're looking back at your own work.
Advantages of Self Generated Research
An example of self generated research is your own recorded video. Video production you've made which becomes research once you are looking into elements of filming techniques and shot types, so long as you're looking back at your own work.
Advantages of Self Generated Research
- Its cheaper - When using this research for short film production this can help the production because you're not having to spend money on images, videos or music because you have made it yourself.
- No plagiarism - You're not having to put all the legal copyrights over the product because you have made it yourself and it enables you to save money.
- Up to date - The research found is all up to date and helps short film productions because its the most up to date item you will get.
- Reliable - Nothing is more reliable than your own source, this can help short film productions because it doesn't stop them to think about whether it is reliable or not.
- Tailor it to your own skill set - You can use the information required in any way you want and that can help short film productions massively.

Data Gathering Agencies
A data gathering agency is an agency that captures and records consumption of footage and an example of a data gathering agency is barb.
By the statistics that Barb has produced for the views of TV between the 28th of December to the 3rd of January you can see that BBC 1 is the most popular TV channel then behind it is BBC 2, ITV and Channel 4.
The statistics for BBC 1 is significantly higher because of the week between the 28th and the 3rd because of the New Years Day fireworks which had over 11 thousand views. Also during these dates people are off work so they are at home and might want to go onto a channel where there are no breaks involved.
Short films have to be more creative with to see who views their film. If the short film is posted on YouTube they can check how many people view it by the number of views they have.
The purpose of these data gathering agencies to give people an idea on how many people watch tv on certain days. This is very important to my research on short films because agencies such as BARB could tell me how many times my short film was viewed on that particular day and when it was aired, which is a clear indication on how much my film got viewed.

The Purpose and Nature of Primary Research
The main source of research is primary research. Primary research is when you do your own individual research so that all the research is brand new as you don't take it from any other sources otherwise that is secondary research. Examples of primary research are questionnaires that you make and hand out and then analyse the answers people give you and it should be relevant to the area/topic you are studying.
The advantages and disadvantages are taken from the website at the bottom and was written by Penna Sparrow.

Disadvantages
The advantages and disadvantages are taken from the website at the bottom and was written by Penna Sparrow.
Advantages
- Targeted issues are addressed - This relates to the issues you are researching for example favourite genre of short films.
- The data interpretation is better - The data collected can be examined and interpreted by the makers depending on their needs rather than interpretations made by people in the secondary data.
- Recency of data - Secondary data is no normally recent whereas primary data is very recent and a fresh piece of data.
Disadvantages
- It is time consuming
- High cost
- Inaccurate feedbacks - Feedbacks given back are usually biased of just given for the sake of it.
- More number of resources are required - Human resources and materials are needed in larger quantity to do surveys and data collection.
Interview techniques - Interview techniques refer to whether the interview is formal or informal. If the interview is formal then the interviewee would dress in formal dressing such as a suit and if it is informal then they would dress up in casual trousers a t-shirt trainers etc. This is relevant for short films because they are going to be less formal than retail for example. In the film industry they recruit people based on their relationships, who they are and creativity.
Observations - studying behaviour - Observations come under how someone observes someones behaviour, for example maybe a trainee who wants to become a director would observe the director for a film and would try and pick up the traits and qualities needed to become a director.
Questionnaires - Questionnaires are a form of primary research which asks the audience specific questions on what they want to find it and has more in depth answers. This can be relevant to short films because it can get an insight into what the audience wants.
Survey - Surveys are a quicker way to gather quantitative data as it captures closed question responses. Surveys are another form of primary research and in short films can get an insight into what the audience wants.
Types of questions - The types of questions asked all depend on what you want to find out. Open questions are useful especially in short films because it will give an in depth answer to what the consumer wants and needs. Also closed questions will give a basic yes or no answer to something that you want to find out about your audience.
Focus groups - Focus groups are really useful because its a small group of people who have a discussion about certain topics. This is really useful with short films because it will get verbal feedback to what you want from it and find out what the people want.
Audience panels - Audience panels are useful to find out what the audience wants and example of this is the television show Gogglebox, this show is all about the audience and they pick a few families on different economic backgrounds and they decide what to watch for the rest of the UK. This could be very useful for short film directors because it gives an insight on what their target audience wants out of the film and what genre and topics they want within it.
Participation in internet forums - Participation in internet forums are very useful for short film directors because they get first hand feedback from their audience to find out what they want and gets asked questions about their film which audience members are curious about.

The nature and purposes of secondary research
A periodical is a magazine or newspaper that is published at regular intervals. This is significant to short film production because in the niche market there could be a magazine published regularly such as Empire magazine which keeps the audience updated with new films, new technology contacts to actors or crew.
A newspaper a printed publication (usually issued daily or weekly) consisting of folded unstapled sheets and containing news, articles, advertisements, and correspondence. This is important to short film productions because newspapers can allow you to advertise your film in the newspaper.
A film archive is a collection of films. For a comprehensive look at the history of film preservation and the institutions and organizations that developed various practices, see Penelope Houston's Keepers of the Frame. This is significant to short film production because it can give the directors and writers ideas for films which are similar to the films already made.
A photo library is an archive or collection of photos. This is important to short film production because it will allow the location designer to get ideas for the sets needed for the film they're making.
The worldwide web is an open source information space where documents and other web resources are identified by URLs, interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet. It has become known simply as the Web. This is significant to secondary research for short films because it allows people to look for information anywhere at anytime.
A CD-Rom database
Audio material is audio tracks that can be reproduced (playback), mechanically and electronically or even both. Audio material is vital for the post production side of things when it comes to making a short film because you will need audio tracks to bring feeling to the scenes and to make the audience feel something for the characters.
Ratings are important to potential consumers because if a film or television show has good ratings it will grab attention of other consumers which will bring in more revenue for the film or television show.
Circulation figures is important because it is how many copies are made so newspapers will make a certain amount each day for their consumers. This is important to a short film production because it could be used as a form of advertisement because 50-60% of newspapers are filled with advertisements so it could be beneficial to advertise the short film in popular newspapers.
Government statistics are published by government agencies or other public bodies, this is all accurate data and could be beneficial for a short film production because then they can gather accurate data from the government.

Secondary Research - 'The importance of Research in Short Films'
The importance of research in short films
Researching short films is very important because it allows the person researching about the topic to explore many different ideas and ways of getting ideas.
Producing and directing the short film and video by Peter Rea, David K Irving
Rea et al states that, "you might need to do extensive research to determine whether the subject matter warrants making short film." (2015, pg. 30) This is important because it tells us that when researching about short films that extensive research is needed because you need the detail to make a good short film. Rea continues on saying, "you might have to have to view films or videos on the same or similar subjects, research newspaper and magazine articles, or conduct pre-interviews". This quote I have picked out has given more sources of secondary research which could be very useful for researching for example watching a short film or video on the topic you want to do could be a very useful way to get an insight on the topic, this would enable you to construct credible representation of the area or subject matter.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Quantitative Research
Advantages
Quantitative research allows for a broader study, which involves a greater number of subjects, and enhancing the genrraisation of the results. This is useful to the research of short films because it allows people who are being asked these questions to come out with answers other people would choose.
Another advantage of quantitative research is that it can allow greater accuracy of results. This is very useful when researching about my film because it will give me a more certain answer of what people want.
Finally quantitative research is useful because it can stop personal bias because it can be avoided by researchers keeping a 'distance' from participating people and employing subjects known to them. This is useful when researching about my film because a bias view can change someones opinion on something, but if there is not a bias view then the answer will be very accurate.
Disadvantages
A disadvantage of quantitative research is that it can collect a much narrower dataset which is not very useful when researching about my short film because it would be useful to have a wider range of data so it could give me a more of a range of ideas.
Another disadvantage is that the development of standard questions by researchers can lead to false representation because the data reflects the view of them instead of the participating person.

Programme Ratings
Readership circulation figures means the amount of viewers you have watching a programme, advert all at the same time.
Barb gathers information like how many people watched Coronation Street last week. This is an important resource when finding out the most popular times to publish a media product on the television.
