My research was based on finding information about teenagers living in Banstead. I was trying to research about this because I want to film a documentary on teenagers living in Banstead and what social activities there are to do in Banstead.

The types of research I undertook was Primary and secondary research, audience research, market research and also production research.

The first part of researching I done was secondary research. For this research it involved finding readership circulation figures for cinemas in the local area and I found out that it was £12 a ticket for an adult and a family of 4 would spend £50 to go to the cinema. I also had to find box office figures of documentaries and see how successful they went with their documentary.

Primary research was another type of research I undertook and this was very important as I had to do a questionnaire and a face-to-face interview with someone who lives in Banstead to find out more about what social activities there are to do in Banstead. With my questionnaire I was finding quantitative information as they was giving me numerical data for example one of the questions was:

How often do you travel outside of Banstead to enjoy social activities?

·         B) Daily

·         C) Monthly

·         D) Rarely

60% of people who took this questionnaire said they need to travel outside of Banstead weekly to enjoy social activities which is very important to my research.

The results from my questionnaire was very important to me as it showed what a group of teenagers think of Banstead for its social activities.

Another part of my primary research was to undertake an interview with a teenager who lives in Banstead. This helped my find a more in depth answer about what social activities there are to do in Banstead and this has definitely moved my research forward. Finally I did a controlled observation and in this observation I printed out leaflets of things to do in Banstead and left them in the table of the sixth form centre which people picked up and I would observe their reactions towards the activities. This helped my research massively because it showed what would interest people around my age group and what they would like to do in their free/social time.

I undertook audience research and market research and this all helped me towards my overall goal because I chose a target audience for this documentary and I feel like maybe the older group of people would watch it instead of the younger teens.

I found out that there isn’t a lot of social activities for teenagers to do in Banstead and this is very important as in the face-to-face interview I did as part of my primary research, the person I interviewed said that young teens could get into drugs and crime purely because there is such a lack of activities to do that they seem bored. This is really important to my research and my media film production because Banstead need to have more facilities for not just the younger teenagers but also the older teens. As part of my secondary research I went onto trip advisor and I found out that there was only three attractions for Banstead they were:

·         The Lavender Fields

·         The Woolpack

·         Café Italia

This was really important to my research purely because none of these local attractions would attract teenagers besides the Woolpack but again the teenagers would have to be 18 and above to enjoy it, and it still doesn’t satisfy the young teenagers in Banstead.

I have gotten all the research needed for the production stage, and by doing this research and preparation for my documentary about the social activities for teenagers living in Banstead, it has given me a massive helping hand on what to include in my film. From the research it has given me reliable information which I could use in my documentary and use what I have found within the film itself.
